SBY orders task force to 'look back' into BLBI case

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has ordered the Task force against Court Mafia to "look back" and seek for the possibility to handle the unsolved case of Bank Indonesia Liquidity Supports (BLBI), believed to have caused trillions of rupiah of state losses.

Task force secretary Denny Indrayana said the order was given during the task force's three-monthly meeting with the President at the Presidential Office in Jakarta on Tuesday.

"He reminded us to focus on big fish cases within our work boundaries, one of which is being the BLBI case that he told us to look back and scrutinize how it has been handled," Denny told the press after the meeting.

"... It's because there's state losses there; hundreds of trillions of Rupiah of state money have not returned," he added.

The BLBI case traced back to the late 1990s Asian monetary crisis, during which the then government poured down over Rp 600 trillion in liquidity supports to a number of banks to prevent them from falling.

Only some amount of the money, however, has been returned to the state.
